Abstract
The era of the large, detailed landscape painting came into its own at the time of Yosemite's discovery and development, from 1851 to 1880. After 1880 public tastes changed and these monumental works passed out of style. The early artists of Yosemite were largely responsible for the influx of thousands of tourists and travelers in the second half of the nineteenth century. The American people wanted to believe in an area resplendent with mountains, waterfalls, and unbelievably tall trees, but doubted the actual authenticity of the artists' visual descriptions of Yosemite's features. Thus the paintings needed the reinforcement of photography and the written word. For this reason I have included sections on the writers and photographers who followed in the wake of the painters.
