Abstract

The primary goal of study was to gain insight into the relationship between state gun laws and firearm homicide rates. To do this, the Brady Campaign's Annual State Scorecard was used to assign a score for each state based on the number of gun control laws. These scores were then matched to each state's firearm homicide rate to determine a correlation coefficient. The correlation between the two variables was found to be very weak. The same analysis was then performed five times with the homicide victim population broken into five separate groups based on victim age. The results of these five analyses demonstrated that as victim age increased, a stronger correlation between the two variables can be observed.
