Abstract
The VHSM is doing many things right, and by creating a formal volunteer management plan they will only improve the service that they provide to the community. The staff are dedicated and hard working, creating an environment that fosters advancement and sustainability, while the volunteers are passionate and engaged, constantly helping the Museum become better in every way they can influence: With so much of the organization well run and already engaging in best practices, the transition to create and adopt the volunteer management strategies offered in the moderate solution should be relatively smooth, creating an even better environment to eventually pursue the risky option. The creation and use of a formalized volunteer structure cannot hinder the Museum, it can only improve its relationship with its volunteers, community, and patrons by streamlining administrative concerns and creating a standardized set of expectations and benefits for every volunteer. An appreciated volunteer is a happy volunteer, and a happy volunteer is an effective volunteer, and by creating formal foundations the VHSM shows its volunteers how truly appreciated they are, creating a positive and sustainable volunteer workforce environment that serves the mission and the volunteer into the future.
