Abstract
As a way to illuminate the disconnect between museums and the needs and expectations of the twenty-first century public, the following analysis is a case study of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF). Having spent nearly four years as an employee of FAMSF, the insight provided in this paper is based on personal experience and conversations with colleagues concerning the functions of the organization. Each museum is unique. However, by focusing in on FAMSF, I hope to provide a model for how a museum might begin to position itself concretely in the twenty-first century and thus secure its future in service to its public. The paper begins with a redefinition of FAMSF's core vision in terms appropriate to the twenty first century. The second section makes an argument for action steps that would set FAMSF on a path to meeting these challenges.
