Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the differences in concerns that confront a high school athlete prior to the transitional phase of college entrance and the already matriculating college student-athlete having experienced the transition. Two groups were surveyed, high school athletes anticipating the transition and college athletes having already made the transition. A 21-item survey was developed and administered to 230 athletes. Data analysis included T-tests, frequencies and multivariate analysis of variance. Population (high school/college) and gender (rn/f) were used in the analysis as independent variables. Results indicated that high school athletes anticipate greater stress with three identified areas (relationships with others, pressure to maintain scholarship status, and incidences of racism) than do college athletes having experienced the passage, regardless of gender, and female athletes ascribe a greater importance to five areas of concern (personal and roommate relationships, teammate relationships, acceptance of the program structure, incidences of sexism, and alcohol/recreational drugs) than do male athletes, regardless of population. Implications of the results were discussed and recommendations were made.
