Abstract

Chapter Abstract Chapter One explores current approaches to developing motivation to exercise. What is discovered is that currently there is an absence of models which focus on the process of developing intrinsic motivation specifically for exercise. However, Bandura's self-efficacy model suggest that by focusing on appropriate skill development for a given task self-efficacy leads to positive outcomes, which in turn reinforces the initial motivation to do something. The key to self-efficacy is that it is specific. Both the task and skill development must be clearly defined. Although Bandura provides a conceptual foundation for a process model for developing motivation, it is not specific enough for application in exercise and fitness. This leads to the evolution of theory, that is Establishing Exercise Efficacy. The effort here then is to provide a conceptual framework which not only integrates current theoretical approaches to exercise motivation, but one which also seeks to address the issue of yoking together body, mind, and spirit. Chapter Two is devoted to defining fitness. The assumption here is that intrinsic motivation is the most salient feature of exercise adherence, and that exercise adherence is promoted as a means to developing and maintaining fitness. Thus the goal of establishing exercise efficacy is ultimately to promote fitness. The fact that there exists a lack of clarity among fitness scholars and professionals forces the re-structuring of the known facts about fitness into a context which provides clear and identifiable goals. Chapter two addresses the need for actuating the establishing exercise efficacy construct by defining fitness, and the role of exercise. This definition follows the precedent set by the YMCA and relies on a symbolic representation to integrate the dimensions of body, mind and spirit.
