Abstract

This paper will discuss some of the modern technological developments that can help curators, conservators, registrars and other scholars in obtaining the information locked within the artifacts. This data together with their knowledge of other cultural clues should help put all the pieces into proper historical perspective. As it would be impractical to try to cover all techniques for all artifactual materials in this paper, the various classes of artifacts will be touched upon, but it will only go into detail on ceramics and metals, bronzes in particular. This paper will deal less with the theory of why the techniques work and more on what information can or cannot be obtained. It should provide a guide for museum personnel on how they can obtain assistance in identification, authentication and analysis of specific types of artifacts.
