Abstract

This Final Project would not be complete without acknowledging those persons who contributed to its formation. In particular, I would like to mention Deborah Kirshman, program coordinator of the Center for the Museum Studies and my Thesis Coordinator, for her excellent guidance; and Karen Bruhns, anthropologist, professor, San Francisco State University and my subject specialist, who has aided me with her expertise, thoughtfulness and encouragement. I would also like to acknowledge my gratitude to the following collectors who have generously allowed me to study their collections: Margery Anneberg, Patricia Bertrand, John Paul, Arthur Waugh, Inez Storer, Judy Wolff, and Charles Campbell. Finally, thanks goes to Maggie Paez for her extremely able editing and typing of the complex catalogue manuscript; and to my family - my son, Christopher, and my daughter, Francisca, for their understanding and patience.
