Abstract

The purpose of this study was to use the students' passion for Pokemon to teach specific Mathematics and Language Arts content. Pokemon is an animated television program based on the Japanese Nintendo64 Pokemon game. The name also refers to the Pokemon trading cards, and the hand held Pokemon Gameboy computer game. The hypothesis was that by integrating the students' passion for Pokemon into specific Mathematics and Language Arts lessons, they would actively participate and learn the content. Thirty three fourth grade students were the participants in three specially designed lessons. All thirty-three students actively engaged in the activities and the majority of students successfully completed the assigned tasks. It is suggested, however, that the study should be conducted in other lessons and curricula areas.
