Abstract

The current study investigated the ways that employees coped with being laid off, and how families, companies, and other parts of a person's social environment, helped cope with job loss. The emphasis was on people who had experienced recent job loss, within the last six months. One focus was on the presence of systems or people who supported and encouraged the "job-loser", in practical and psychological ways. This study was both qualitative and quantitative, and strove to gain a better understanding of the mindset of families that are faced with coping and healing. It investigated key practices and processes used to regain hope by the person laid off, as well as their family. The study also explored for other potential family reactions or responses to the employee who lost his or her job.
