Abstract

My statement or thesis concerns the healing power of poetic thesis. Poetry in its fullest form embraces the intention and techniques of ritual drama - the intention to renew, the vocal techniques of intonation and chant, and the ceremonial and symbolic uses of gesture and movement. I am referring, obviously, to an archaic sense of poetry, before it became, like so many of the "arts", isolated and diminished, until it now encompasses merely the mastery of words. Poetry in its archaic sense, however, is a healing art, an art through which (for example) the lost soul is returned to the body - a prospect of major importance in a society where religious traditions viewing the body as corrupting to the spirit often inhibit unification of body and spirit.
