Abstract
The purpose of this study was to define and clarify issues and strategies regarding NAGPRA and the care and repatriation of Native Hawaiian cultural materials in and from museums. Research focuses on identifying NAGPRA related issues most problematic to Native Hawaiians and addressing their concerns with concrete methods for increasing and facilitating dialogue and collaboration between museums and Native Hawaiian groups. The process of deaccessioning sacred objects can be costly for museums, and it takes cooperation from all parties involved to continue with sensitivity and commitment to the intent of the law. By increasing constructive dialogue and cultural education between museums and native groups, implementing NAGPRA can be a fulfilling experience for both parties.
