Abstract

A description of quantitative and qualitative characteristics of initial sandworlds of severely disturbed adult individuals is presented. A convenient and efficient method for the comprehensive and systematic analysis of sandworld characteristics is described. Eleven male and 8 female clients at a psychiatric day treatment clinic made sandworlda during therapy sessions. Initial sandworlds were examined and session notes were reviewed. The presence and frequency of characteristics were determined for general aspects, components, construction, dynamics, and responses. Observation frequency percentages of characteristics determined similarities, % > 50, or differences, % < 50. Most of the large and detailed array of characteristics identified contradict previous reports based on observations of individual cases. Comparison with the 45 previously reported characteristics shows agreement for the 5 characteristics: dry sand, internal boundaries, rows of objects, small separate groups of objects, and elements of fantasy. Possible explanations for comparison differences are explored. Future applications are discussed and further research topics are suggested.
