dc.description.abstract | This study explores various aspects of how Mindfulness practices and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction may help reduce anxiety in students who selectively remain silent. This research project is organized as a manuscript thesis and has a conceptual focus. The introductory chapter provides an overview to the area of study. An introduction to the history, etiology and treatment of selective mutism is reviewed followed by a discussion regarding the potential impacts these symptoms have on selectively mute students in regards to education, relationships, self-identity and self-concept. The next chapter examines the physiological effects of anxiety disorders as they may apply to the phenomena of selective mutism. Following this, the history and concept of mindfulness is discussed and the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn is examined with his development of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program and how this may serve as a practical intervention for educational professionals to use in schools to support selectively mute students. To conclude, an inquiry into potential effects of MBSR in the classroom and future implications for researching mindfulness practices in supporting selective mutism is proposed. | |
