Abstract
Usually when one hears the term “serial killer” they equate it with a horror movie that they have recently seen or perhaps a detective book they have read. The truth is however that these books and movies are unfortunately bases on true stories. Serial killers are real and they are an increasingly growing problem in society today. The extent of serial murder is unknown. Some experts believe that at any given time there are as many as 500 serial killers operating in the United States. Although there have been thousands of studies conducted concerning serial murder, there remains a question. Why? Why do these individuals kill? What is it that separates them from the rest of society? Are serial killers born, or are they created? This paper will discuss several of the theories that researchers have come upwithinan attempt to answer this question.
