Abstract

The number of juveniles committing serious violent offenses in schools—including homicides, physical abuse, and bullying—is increasing. Identifying the risk factors contributing to these behaviors is necessary to assist communities, families, and schools with violent juveniles or those juveniles on the verge of committing a crime. It has been found that the media is a main contributor to the increase of violent behavior in schools. School shootings are a result of the violent behavior taking place at schools. Therefore, schools implement law enforcement policies to deter crime and utilize resource officers to minimize on-campus violence. A compilation of completed studies addressing the factors involved was reviewed to decipher whether there is a profile that successfully describes a school shooter. These studies did not confirm the existence of a profile, yet there exists a list of common characteristics among school shooters. In this thesis, previous research studies and their data were utilized to help identify a profile of a violent juvenile heading towards becoming a school shooter, and solutions are identified to stop these actions, taking a lead from today’s trending issues. The objective is for schools to acknowledge and determine those juveniles who are at risk of committing violent behaviors. School violence and shootings not only impact the school but also play a major role in the community. Deterring juveniles from committing harmful actions will prevent more juveniles from entering into the criminal justice system.
