Abstract

As the non-consensual distribution of intimate images (NCDII) becomes increasingly prevalent among adolescents, it is essential to examine the psychosocial risks associated with this issue to develop effective interventions. Adolescents impacted by NCDII face devastating consequences, including pervasive social stigmatization, loss of trust, isolation, psychological distress, disruptions in self-perception, and heightened risks of suicidality and self-harm. The successful navigation of developmental stages is crucial for their long-term psychosocial well-being, making it imperative to address these concerns effectively in adolescence. This capstone reviews the literature on the psychosocial impacts of NCDII, with a focus on how it impacts adolescent development. Based on these findings, recommendations for counselling psychology are presented, emphasizing a client-centred, strengths-based approach, education for youth and youth advocates, and leveraging the privileged role of counsellors to drive social change.
