Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between stimulant drug use, weight consciousness/body image issues, and disordered eating in women. Current models for treating drug addiction neglect to take this relationship into account, and thus fail to be as effective as they could be. The integration of nutrition education into drug treatment programs will address these issues while enabling a tremendous shift to take place; women will learn how to better nourish themselves and heal their own bodies, not only empowering them to recover from addiction, but also to take charge of their own health. Nutritional guidelines for rebalancing brain chemistry, (often damaged by drug addiction), a simple protocol for cleansing the liver, and the benefits of exercise in recovery are also outlined. The paper concludes by describing how better nutrition can inspire and enrich spiritual practice, an essential component in recovery.
