Abstract
This study begins with a description of the research methodology. The methodology for this project relies upon 13 interviews conducted with visual artists and museum educators in California. A limitations section follows which describes the areas of research this project did not cover. After the limitations section is the literature review which discusses the relationship between artists and museum education and programming from a historical perspective. The literature review also discusses past and current concerns regarding artist facilitated museum programs, including customer service. Also included in the literature review are human resource recruiting and hiring practices used in the for-profit sector that museum educators may want to consider utilizing when recruiting visual artists. Following the literature review section is a comprehensive overview of the research findings. The findings section lists the recurring themes and practices that presented themselves during the interviews, such as internal networking, Request for Proposals and utilizing arts organizations. A conclusion and recommendation section follows the findings. Recommendations are made to help museum educators to improve their hiring practices and possibly implement a standard of practice. Also included is a list of desired criteria for the hiring of visual artists for public programming.
