Many graduate programs training psychotherapists work from an assumption that psychotherapy can benefit student clinicians' development and require their students to participate in psychotherapy during their training. This study investigated the experiences of 10 self-identified doctoral students 18 years or older who attended doctoral programs that mandated psychotherapy as an academic requirement. Semi-structured interviews were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis. Results indicated that participants who had positive attitudes towards participating in therapy (based on either previous personal experiences or other people's experiences) approached treatment and the requirement optimistically. Some participants initially had negative attitudes towards therapy and the therapy requirement due to unsatisfactory previous experiences. However, the therapist's ability to build rapport aided participants in being receptive to treatment. Furthermore, the participants indicated that they gained improved personal and professional development through completing the required therapy, and it was recommended that other students participate in therapy as a part of training. The relationship of these findings to literature and the clinical implications of the findings are discussed.
