Abstract

This project serves to examine the increase in the number of sex predators that use the internet to solicit underage children for sex. Most sex predators use online chat rooms to attract underage children. The Department of Justice survey called The Youth Internet Safety Survey; issued by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that asked American teens between 10 and 17 about their online experiences. The Youth Internet Safety Survey was a telephone survey of a national sample of youth, ages 10 to 17, and their parents, to assess the incidence, consequences and risk factors related to unwanted or illegal exposure of children and adolescents to sexual solicitation, harassment and pornography on the Internet and to determine children's and parents' knowledge of how to respond to such episodes. The goal of the survey was to quantify and detail youth experiences with unwanted sexual solicitation, unwanted exposure to sexual material, and harassment on the Internet.
