dc.description.abstractThe research for this paper began with the purpose to educate and prepare its readers in order to guide and assist school counsellors in the development, implementation and evaluation of their own school based mentorship program. By presenting the numerous social, emotional and academic benefits of a school based mentoring program, this paper argues for the inclusion of mentorship programs in middle and secondary schools in which senior students become mentors for younger students. These mentorship programs would be established to assist and support the development of the whole child. By summarizing and highlight the most effective practices and outlining the necessary partnerships and roles of the school community including parents, school counsellors, administrators and senior management this paper provides an overview of research and foundational elements of a successful school based mentorship program. In its conclusion, the paper outlines and suggests first steps for building a successful school based program.
