Abstract

Cultural constructs are often a barrier to the successful resolution of sexual abuse and interpersonal violence (IPV) within the South Asian community in the west. Families place a great deal of emphasis on honour. This honour is often directly tied with the chastity of women/girls. A woman who is sexually abused by her husband is often given no assistance because the preservation of the marriage and the betterment of the children as well as the honour of the family are seen as paramount. In this thesis, I examine the South Asian social constructs that contribute to the IPV and sexual abuse against South Asian women in the West and the conditions that prevent effective intervention in abusive situations. Recommendations are made.
