Abstract
This report describes an action research program that draws on different theories to create effective strategies to help children in Special and General Education to read and to strength their skills. The targeted population consisted often special day students who are bussed in from a low social-economical area. Evidence of the existence of these problems was gathered from teacher observations, assessments, students and parents survey.
A review of research literature combined with analysis of the problem settings suggested a three - faceted intervention: students not feeling alienated in a school setting, proper testing and diagnosis and establishing parental and community support.
Post intervention data indicated an increase in students reading ability, more assessments taken throughout the year and the establishment of parent and community support was the result of this research.
