dc.description.abstractHuman beings have a longing to be connected with one another, to find meaning and purpose in their lives and to be free from suffering. People living with serious mental health concerns can often feel isolated, lack a sense of meaning in their lives and live with much distress. This study focuses on the influence of compassion as it relates to working with people who are receiving services in the mental health system. The greatest therapeutic effectiveness can result when we as helpers are first self-compassionate, and then extend compassion to our clients and to ultimately assist our clients in being self-compassionate. Utilizing a literature review methodology, as well as drawing on my own experience working in the mental health field, I propose that compassion is a crucial element in the healing and recovery journey of people receiving services for mental health concerns.
