Abstract

The purpose of this project is to assess the prevalence of the use of props in historic house museums across the United States and to understand museum professionals' motivations for, and attitudes about, the practice. The result of this assessment is an article addressed to museum professionals, to be submitted to History News, the magazine of the American Association for State and Local History. The article attempts to raise awareness about the practice of using props by discussing their types of uses and their roles in interpretation; it encourages museum professionals to use props responsibly by recommending various techniques by which to do so.
