dc.description.abstract | Sculpture is becoming an important aspect of urban design in the San Francisco Bay Area as more and more works appear in public areas. My interest is to explore this renaissance in outdoor sculpture, largely brought about in the past two decades by federal, civic, and corporate support. There has been a great deal written about the outdoor sculpture in the San Francisco Bay Area – articles in local papers and magazines, a brochure by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency published in 1979 (a photographic survey), and A Survey of Art Work in the City and County of Sari Francisco by the San Francisco Art Commission, first published in 1953 and revised in 1975; however, there has not been any definitive study in thesis or book form which placed the entire body of Bay Area outdoor sculpture in its historical and chronological context so that this artistic resource can be assessed as a total collection rather than as individual works. I have limited my study primarily to free-standing, outdoor sculpture, including those which I feel are of merit; those selected are accessible to the public and are located in the communities along the periphery of the San Francisco Bay. This geographic boundary has been an arbitrary decision, as the Bay Area (consisting of Alameda, Contra Costa, Mann, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. counties) extends some distance beyond the bay itself; thus, I have not included more distant cities such as San Jose and Napa, both of which have small collections of outdoor sculpture. Although I have researched the majority of outdoor sculpture in the areas designated, I have not attempted to make a complete survey of existing works. | |
