Abstract
117 individuals working in the San Francisco Bay Area, participated in this study examining the relationship between sex, family configuration (marital status and the presence or absence of children), household responsibilities, and professional advancement. A questionnaire consisting of sixteen items designed to establish demographic characteristics, and two eight-item scales designed to measure levels of household responsibility and professional advancement, was administered. Participants were classified according to sex and family configuration, and using Tukey's multiple comparisons procedure in conjunction with analysis of variance (ANOVA), measures of household responsibility and professional advancement were examined to test the hypothesis that the unequal division of household responsibilities prevents women from advancing professionally.
