The purpose of this master's project is to inform professionals at art museums in the U.S. of ways to engage members of the Millennial Generation— individuals born between 1980 and 2600—in order to cultivate the next wave of museum professionals. These opportunities will lead to an increase in Millennials' participation and are an important support stream for these institutions, in 2009, the Center for the Future of Museums (CFM), an organization designed to assist the field in the exploration of challenges facing society and to develop creative solutions for the future, commissioned the research paper Museums & Society 2034: Trends and Potential Futures. According to the study, museums will soon face an exodus of Baby Boomer generation staff members.' In order to fill the vacated positions, these institutions need to focus their attention on the young professional entering the workforce and offer opportunities to attract, train, and retain this demographic. This project is composed of five sections and begins with a Literature Review, which provides an overview and characteristic profile of the Millennial Generation. An analysis of the writings on Millennials in the workforce creates a general understanding of the qualities that attract this demographic to certain careers, providing variables for museums to use in order to formulate a position designed to appeal to the Millennials' values. An examination of the books and articles written on museum education and visitor experience provide the reasoning for developing multi-faceted part-time positions with a two-fold purpose to engage visitors, fulfilling a museum's mission statement and attracting members of the Millennial Generation. Complementing historical information provided by the Literature Review, the Findings chapter synthesizes information collected through various methodologies to examine what is happening in the field today. The Conclusions and Recommendations chapters offer new ideas for the field with regards to Millennials.
