dc.description.abstract | Ballroom dance is not recognized widely as a therapeutic modality. Yet many of the issues and concepts in the dance/movement therapy literature are similar to those that emerge in the learning processes of ballroom dance. Thus, this research addresses two hypotheses: first, that the way I teach ballroom dance is similar to the way some therapists do therapy; second, that ballroom dance can be used as therapy. The purpose of the research was to see if I could adapt ballroom dance to a therapeutic setting. I interviewed thirteen students and three therapists to get Information that would address my research questions and hypotheses. Basically, the information in the findings supports and gives insights into how ballroom dance can be used as a focus for therapy. In addition, a beginning definition for body awareness, both behaviorally and on a feeling level, has been formulated. | |
