Abstract

Couples Therapy is an important and needed therapeutic intervention, particularly in times when relationships are experiencing increasing pressures from many aspects of modern life. As therapists seek to serve contemporary couples it is crucial to have an idea of the variety of shapes that relationships may take, as well as both the traditional and contemporary therapeutic tools that can be used in serving couples. In this manuscript-style thesis I present an overview of the evolution of couple relationships in the West, as well as some the therapeutic modalities (Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Sound Relationship House) that have been used to serve these relationships. I then give a view of the contemporary relational landscape in the west and introduce some contemporary models and tools for Couples Therapy (Narrative Therapy Informed Relational Interviewing and Desired Outcome Inquiry). Lastly, I propose an integrative model for contemporary therapists, and suggest further areas of inquiry.
