Abstract
20 years following Title IX's mandate in 1972, research on women conducted by the American Association of University Women (AAUW, 1992) discovered that one of the most dramatic gender gaps in self-confidence was centered in the area of competence perceived within themselves. Although they were receiving more opportunities both inside the classroom, in the form of higher education opportunities, and outside of the classroom, in the form of athletic competition opportunities, many young girls were not receiving the positive messages inside the classroom necessary to excel outside of the classroom. How and where did women find direction to strive to do what they loved? It is this question of a woman's direction regarding her self-confidence that continues to boggle the minds of researchers today.
