Abstract

Creativity has the power to connect the human (finite) with the divine (infinite). The philosophy of Taoism delineates the process by which this power of creativity can be released to bridge the gap between the physical realm, which is bounded by form, and the spiritual realm, which is boundless. The process of releasing creativity involves five stages: Gaining freedom from external conditions, recognizing natural laws, learning to go with the flow of life, promoting spontaneity, and experiencing the state of union with the Source. In this thesis I examine these process stages from three points of view: How they are presented in the philosophy of Taoism, how I have personally used them to develop my own creative process as an artist, and how they may be applied in the creative process of the reader.
