Abstract
The purpose of this catalog is to research the Chinese T'ang dynasty (618-906 A.D.) pottery tomb figurines of musicians and dancers; emphasis is on the cultural context of the time and its evolution prior to T'ang. The cultural evolution was a vital factor in the formation of the physical and stylistic characteristics of these figurines. To study the cause of the foreign elements in the appearances of these figurines, it is indispensable to place these specimens against the social and economic background of the T'ang period and to link them to the preceding periods.
