Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the social and cultural adjustment of Afghan refugees living in the San Francisco Bay Area, to describe their general feelings about the process of adjustment, and to understand their resettlement experiences in this country. The study also explored the differences of opinion between older and younger Afghan refugees toward the process of adjusting to the patterns of life and culture of the United States. Questionnaires were administered to 22 participants: 6 older Afghan refugees (5 males and 1 female) and 16 younger Afghan refugees (3 females and 13 males). An Afghan Refugee Resettlement project coordinator was also interviewed for his views on the problems Afghan refugees are experiencing in the Bay Area. The study concluded that the new patterns of life, differences in religious, cultural, and social values and norms, and the trauma of the war in Afghanistan were major sources of stress, anxiety, and depression, and these factors were the basic obstacles in the process of adjustment to life in this country. •
