Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if any intergenerational programs were being done in history museums, and to analyze those programs for their effects and their design and management characteristics. Recommendations and models for the development of intergenerational programs in history museums were then proposed.
A survey was conducted by mailed questionnaire to determine the number and general format of intergenerational programs being offered in history museums in 11 western states. Six intergenerational programs located by this survey were then researched and described in detailed case studies.
The findings of this study were that intergenerational programs in history museums seemed to benefit both program participants, children and seniors, and the sponsoring museums. In particular, the intergenerational programs that included oral history activities appeared to generate a more positive attitude toward seniors among participating children, and seemed to have a positive effect on the children's understanding of and interest in history and museums.
Recommendations for the development of intergenerational programs in history museums stressed the need for careful program planning and the use of collaboration. Seven models were proposed for intergenerational programs in history museums.
