Abstract

Trader Joe's information technology, in both orientation and action, has been frozen for ten years. Unfortunately for TJ, that happened to be when information and communication technology become more acceptable, accessible, and available then every before. Their growth and success has allowed them to evade the capital expenditures and the stretching of their culture that would reflect their competitors' technological agility. The unfreezing that is required with happen either by a realization by their leadership, or a rude awakening when their competition uses efficient supply chains and collaboration platforms to deliver substitute goods and streamlined service. The shift that is required is cultural. This shift is found in rethinking the treasured values of TJ in a way that reflects how business is being conducted now and into the 21st century. Trader Joe's has an opportunity to marry their values to a wired world and the people who live in it.
