Abstract

"To Record and Remember: One Artist's View of the Sampler Tradition" reflects my interest in fiber as part of an historic tradition and my desire to explore some ways in which fiber traditions are carried on in society. The exhibition includes my own work from 1990 and 1991 and historic samplers from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I explore how both the historic samplers and the contemporary work reflect the influences of society. This art has been passed on as women through the centuries have expressed something of themselves through needle and thread. The influence of this expression is seen not only in the historic sampler itself, but also as these various images have remained part of our society through their use in advertising and design. Most importantly, this project is a celebration of the influence of a traditional woman's art form and of my own growth as an artist.
