Abstract

With the increasing popularity of forensic science television programs, a need has arisen to assess the accuracy of forensic science depictions within these shows. Viewers of programs such as C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation may believe they are becoming educated in forensic science through viewing, however the accuracy of the information presented on these shows is questionable. This project gathered data on accuracy of forensic science portrayals on dramatic television by analyzing a sample of episodes from the program C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation. Results indicate that the program depicts forensic science inaccurately in the areas of crime scene processing, technologies utilized, and the speed with which results are achieved. A discussion of the implications of these results to the criminal justice system is also included.
