Abstract

In this study we examine the attendance figures for The Splendor of Dresden show with an eye to a statistical characterization of the attendance. There is a twofold purpose in this. First, any trend or patterns in attendance will become apparent. Second, this study will not only provide comprehensive information about the attendance but can suggest management actions responsive to attendance demands. An attendance profile for this exhibition can be compared with other studies as they become available so as to determine whether attendance at blockbusters follow typical patterns. If, indeed, such patterns are found in the records of blockbusters, the management of these shows can be put on a secure footing in regard to the number of visitors likely at any point. Rather than merely reacting to acute crowd pressures or relying simply on educated guesswork, museum administrators will then have an additional tool for anticipating and planning for the acute pressures of the blockbuster exhibition. More efficient staff use, better service to the visitor, and lessened strain on museum resources can all be served in this way.
