Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to construct a model of human consciousness that includes more than analysis without demeaning the analytic process. I will introduce a model of the mind in which analytic processing complements and conflicts with synthetic processing. Synthetic processing is the polar opposite of analytic processing. That is, analytic processing separates, classifies, identifies, and divides, whereas synthetic processing brings together that which is divided. I will argue that the interaction of analytic and synthetic processing forms a dialectic and that humanity can achieve its greatest potential when there is a dynamic balance between these two processes. The dialectic of mind represents the conflicting yet complementary interaction of analysis and synthesis.
