Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develope recommendations for improving and standardizing museum records. An investigation of the Registration Department's procedures and systems pointed out areas of data duplication. It particularly indicated the need for coordination of record maintenance between the de Young and the Legion of Honor Registration Offices.
The scope of the study and the proposed recommendations apply mainly to the record maintenance function of the Registration Department. These recommendations are presented in two categories. The first category involves suggestions for reorganization within the Registration Department. These recommendations can be implemented immediately without approval of senior museum management. The second category requires approval of senior museum management because recommendations involve additional funding for equipment, personnel and use of staff resources.
