Abstract
Research suggests that helping professionals such as counselling therapists are at a higher risk of developing burnout than their counterparts in other fields; the risk is especially high for those individuals new to the profession. This study examines the nature of therapeutic burnout: symptoms, assessment, etiology, prevention and treatment. The practice of self-compassion, as a means to prevent and/or treat burnout, is considered. Finally, this study recommends integrating mindful self-compassion into counselling training and practice in order to better support both therapists and their clients. This study is informed by the practice of mindfulness, an ancient practice rooted in Buddhist psychology.
