Abstract
Chronic pain is a disease of the nervous system that disempowers the mind, body, and spirit of sufferers. Based upon the conclusion that conventional medicine fails to cure chronic pain, studies on the positive effects of using alternative therapies in treating chronic pain are reviewed. Facts on the nature of chronic pain,, the physiology of pain, and the difference between acute and chronic pain support the need for integrated self-healing therapies. Physical, mental, and spiritual causes of chronic pain, challenges in healing, and studies substantiated on the psychological impact of chronic pain on marriage, sex, and children validate combined conventional and alternative interventions. After the foundations of conventional and alternative medicine are discussed, empowering self-healing techniques and alternative therapies are recommended.
