Abstract
Parents, along with school district officials, have visionary goals of safe schools, thriving attendance, empowered teachers, inclusive activities, an inviting social climate, healthy food menus, and soaring test scores. Truancy, poor attendance, declining test scores, safety issues, poor nutrition, community complaints due to loitering and vandalism, and increasing drug and alcohol usage are all concerns by stakeholders in students' lives. The implementation of a closed campus is one strategy that is intended to address these needs and is typically district driven. A closed campus means that once students step onto the school grounds, they must remain on school grounds unless they have written permission from the school to leave. The purpose of this thesis is to document how one high school implemented the process of transitioning to a closed campus. The inherent challenges, obstacles, and benefits are noted, and a brief update regarding the second year is discussed. It is hoped that such documentation will contribute to the literature and help inform effective guidelines and best practices for other schools considering a closed campus.
