Abstract

The text and photographs presented here chronicle the history of Oakland's waterfront from the earliest settlement, in 1850, to the end of the Depression and the approach of World War II, in 1940. These ninety years witnessed the tremendous expansion and rapid collapse of the ferry service, lumber and grain trade, and shipbuilding industry along the Oakland waterfront. After 1940, vastly increased military involvement, and concomitant changes in economics and geography, ushered in a new era for Oakland's waterfront. World War II witnessed the passing of Oakland's harbor as it was theretofore known; it is to the pre-war era of the waterfront that this catalog and text pertain.
