Abstract

Professional caregivers face various challenges and stressors while working in memory care. Working in memory care differs from other nursing home departments, such as assisted living and skilled nursing. This qualitative study aims to gain a deeper understanding of this population's experiences and the various ways they manage their role as a professional caregiver. Twelve participants identified as professional caregivers who have worked in a memory care unit in a nursing home. In this study, six themes emerged: training and experiences, sympathy and understanding, coping strategies, resources for support, negative caregiver experiences, and positive caregiver experiences. Burnout and Overtime were significant sub-themes that emerged. The findings contributed insight into how this population requires an updated standard of care and increased support.
