Abstract

This research project explores the effects of raising a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on parental identity. Many children are diagnosed with ASD each year, and research has identified that parents face many challenges in their parenting journey, including stigma, burnout, and loss of an imaged life; all of which impact how they view themselves and their capabilities as parents. However, research also recognizes the positive parenting experiences associated with raising a child with ASD. In addition to providing a comprehensive understanding of the parenting experience, this project offers suggestions for those working in the field of counselling psychology to ensure effective and compassionate services are provided to parents of children with ASD. Different cultural and ethical considerations are explored, knowing that disability is perceived differently amongst various cultural and religious groups. Recommendations include a broader incorporation of sociocultural, political, and institutional factors that further impact parents of children with ASD.
