dc.description.abstract | This study seeks to examine the organizational impact of new manager coaching. Very often, these new managers are positioned in the lower-levels of an organization. Because of the potential impact and importance of coaching these new managers, this study is necessary for the development of the coaching profession. The lack of research into the area begged for a new research focus for coaching. This study is one of the first to examine the coaching relationship with newmanagers who have yet to reach the more senior executive level. Professional coaches were interviewed to assess what the coaching relationship looks like when working with new managers such as what behaviors the coach manifests, what types of activities he or she engages the manager in, what topics tend to be prevalent, and how the coaching relationship helps the new manager to develop. Coaching is the fastest growing consulting field in the country (Hall, Otazo & Hollenbeck, 1999; Gale, Liljenstrand, Pardieu, 2002). While the majority of coaching does occur at the senior levels, the marked increase in the numbers of new managers who are searching out coaching points to a new area of discovery. This research into the complexity and uniqueness of this new coaching relationship will greatly benefit the growth of the field. | |
