Abstract

My master's project describes and analyzes in-depth case studies of four U.S. history museums that have developed memorial artifact collections, the approaches museum leaders and collections professionals took to the challenges they faced, and the ways in which they met these challenges. The purpose of this project is to compare and contrast curators' approaches and ongoing collections management issues in order to make recommendations for future collecting efforts. Of most interest to history museum curators and collections managers, my project focuses on the multifaceted set of issues. The resulting product, an article for Museum News, aims to contribute to an understanding about spontaneous memorial forms and functions and may assist collections professionals to make informed decisions when developing memorial collections.
